The Pillars Bed & Breakfast is a restored Victorian-Georgian mansion on a secluded acre of trees and gardens in the Van Wyck Brooks Historic District of Plainfield. Location
By car: close to Newark airport as well as New Hope and the Jersey Shore; and by train or car to New York City. Travelers can come and go easily from Interstate Highways 95, 287 and 78 as well as the Garden State Parkway. Accommodations
All second floor suites have private baths with Alsons showers, hair dryers, terry robes, lots of extra pillows, work/game tables and air conditioning. A laundry and kitchen are also available for your convenience. The John Philip Sousa Suite features dark cherry furnishings, a queen-size canopy bed, and private dressing room. The red, white and blue "Stars and Stripes Forever" decor honors the March King, who held his first concert in Plainfield over a century ago, and is still remembered with an annual Fall Sousa Festival. The Van Wyck Brooks Suite is decorated with cherry furnishings, queen-size canopy bed, and an oversize working fireplace in memory of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author; The Clementine Yates Suite features wicker furnishings, ruffled curtains and a queen-size bed in memory of the lady who renovated the house in 1897. On the third floor guests will enjoy three newly-added suites and a studio apartment.
Amenities
Once inside, in the Grand Foyer, you're greeted by a handsome circular staircase winding up three stories to a stained glass skylight. Imagine a bride coming down those stairs to the strains of Lohengrin! Off the foyer you'll find The Music Room, with its nautical theme, woodburning fireplace, organ and game table; The Living Room, a comfortable place to relax and borrow a book from the library or watch a bit of cable TV; and, of course, The Dining Room, its eight oversize windows sparkling with colored glass. Here you can enjoy a grand breakfast with your complimentary morning newspaper and a cheerful "good morning" from your hosts.
Chuck and Tom, and their Cairn Terrier "Mac", combine their efforts to make every guest comfortable. Welcoming wine, evening turn-down service with chocolates, sherry, cookies, and soda. And little touches like shoe shines, laundry facilities, coffee-to-go, dry cleaning, and custom maps to guide you to your destination.
Meals
With over 40 years' experience in cooking and baking, Chuck prepares a different menu for each day with special attention to dietary needs when requested in the reservation. Swedish baking is his specialty. Business guests appreciate the offer to be served any time from 5:30 on.
