Monmouth Plantation is a glorious return to the antebellum South. Rated 'one of the top ten most romantic places in the USA', this haven of tranquility awaits to enfold you in luxury and service. This lovely country inn's sumptuous grounds--some 26 acres of meticulously cared-for gardens, nature trails, pond and gazebo-are rich with history. Built in 1818 in Greek revival style, this was once the home of the first Mississippi governor.

Location
In the historic district of Natchez, just five minutes from the Mississippi river. Though it's tempting not to leave Monmouth Plantation's ground, there are Gambling Boats, tours of ante-bellum homes, and walking tours through the historic district to consider.

Accommodations
Impeccable decor and comfort beckons guests. The 13 suites, 12 rooms, two Victorian parlors and study that make up Monmouth Plantation are a treat for the senses. Antiques and reproductions adorn the inn. Some guest rooms have spectacular views of the gardens; many offer fireplaces; some have private patios; all have phones and televisions; all offer private baths; and 8 of the suites have jacuzzi tubs. Five guest rooms and one suite, with a kitchen in the main house. Three rooms and a suite are nestled into the former servants quarters and four rooms are in the Garden Cottages. Lastly, four suites had been added in the old coach house and six suites in the old barn.

Amenities
Guests may spend their days leisurely playing croquet or fishing on the grounds. And the diligent staff, including manager Jim Anderson, all do their part to make guests feel welcome. Marguerite Guercio, who has been the hostess at Monmouth for the past 18 years, greets all guests and tours, and likes to provide an atmosphere where her guests feel cared for and loved. Arriving honeymooners are treated with champagne. Also on the grounds are a full-service bar, a fully equipped conference room, great spaces for retreats and weddings, and a gift shop offering many Victorian items.

Meals
Guests receive a full southern breakfast in the informal dining room. Breakfast may consist of sausages, eggs, grits, freshly baked breads, biscuits, fruit, coffee and juice. The formal dining room uses a center table dating from 1826, which is set with owner's collection of Sevres china. Large and elaborate floral arrangements are brought in daily. Each night you may make a reservation to participate in a wonderful ritual. The staff prepares and serves a romantic five-course dinner by candlelight.
