Meals
For the Convenience of our Guests
And the Pleasure of the ‘Gentile’ Public,
The Onset Village Inn offers an afternoon tea and an evening cafe.
Tea by the Sea
Each afternoon beginning at 3, enjoy the breathtaking view of magnificent Onset Bay while indulging in traditional, and not-so traditional, tea time treats (English scones and home-made breads, specialty cakes, pies, and Norwegian waffles).
Café Society
Unwind at the Bluestocking Café and Tea Room, with a cocktail, mocktail, (the ones without alcohol) glass of fine wine or a single malt scotch. Light fare and light-heartedness are on hand beginning at 6 in the evening.
Note: The seasonal liquor license allows us to serve alcohol only from April 1 to Jan 15th. Between Jan 15 and April 1st , like Cinderella and the pumpkin, we have to turn into a coffee house. But we are still permitted to serve non-alcoholic mocktails, cappucino, café au lait and the like. And we will still offer various amusements to get you (and us) through the winter.
Whether tea-ing or ‘tail-ing, take advantage of our spectacular location which overlooks beautiful Onset Beach, sailing and fishing boats, and a constant play of quaint activity in a Victorian harbor that time forgot.
In the parlor take a peek at our library of great books, or into our Victorian game chest with its veritable bevy of entertaining pastimes, including Pinochle and Cribbage. Or simply sit with friends -- old and new – for quiet conversation as soft, lilting music plays in the background. Join our Bluestocking Society – another lighthearted part of our Café. Read about it below:
The Bluestocking Society
of the
Bluestocking Café and Tea Room
The term Bluestocking derived from meetings that took place at the home and salon of Elizabeth Montagu (circa 1750), where she encouraged literary discussions to replace card games and gossip (gad!). Evidently one of the guests, a Mr. Benjamin Stillingfleet, always wore blue stockings in protest (rather than the obligatory white for formal wear); hence the less-than-flattering reference to the group as the "Bluestocking Club." The term "Bluestocking" came to mean a woman of pretentious intellectual interests.
The Bluestocking Society seeks to continue this great tradition of cultivating the art of being insufferably tedious. So, if you are a serious or aspiring pseudo-intellectual, join our Society by taking the "Bluestocking Orals" and see if you qualify:
Qualifying Questions:
1. Have you ever been rejected by Mensa or an Ivy League Institution?
2. Do you know what Mensa or the Ivy League is?
Correct responses: 1. Yes (You can fib) 2. No (or play dumb)
Qualifying applicants will receive an Official Blue Stocking Card and Credo
NOTE BENE:
If you are a member of Mensa, and/or an Ivy grad, (but you must be able to prove it!) you will be given one free drink for putting up with our silliness! With your permission, we will also ring a bell and introduce you to all present so they may have the honor of meeting a
"True Intellectual."
