Chambery Inn
Lee, MA 00
This Berkshire 1885 Petit Chateau is a restoration masterpiece, truly a romantic and rejuvenating retreat that you will not soon forget. Designed by architect James Murphy and contracted in 1885 the school was the fulfillment of Jane Sedgewick of Stockbridge, the foundress, who convinced the parish of St. Mary's and the sisters of St. Joseph Chambery, France, who sent five French nuns, to support a school project. The original building, the oldest parochial school in Berkshire County, housed classes from the school opening January 1886 until 1957 when the parish opened on Orchard Street, the "new" St. Mary's school. The school was scheduled for demolition but local businessman and lifelong resident, Joseph M. Toole rescued the building by agreeing to relocate the 300 ton structure one block to the corner of Main and Elm Streets in Lee. The Chambery Inn opened September 30, 1990 with virtually all the original exterior and interior fabric preserved. Built as the county's first parochial school, the unique French-influenced structure elegantly contains 9 truly unique accommodations.
