One of the crown jewels of Georgia's famed Golden Isles, Little St. Simons
Island offers privacy, seven miles of pristine beaches and 10,000 acres of
undeveloped wilderness for exploration and relaxation. Owned by the same
family since 1908, Little St. Simons Island has retained the charm and
unhurried pace of coastal living. Moss-draped live oaks and glistening
marshes surround comfortable accommodations at The Lodge on Little St. Simons
Island for just 30 overnight guests. The owners engage visitors with a rare
experience combining complete privacy in an unspoiled wilderness with the
thoughtful service and Southern hospitality of a professional staff. Comfort
in a natural setting is the theme here, and the classic Hunting Lodge, built
in 1917 is at the very heart of it. Reminiscent of a Hemingway novel, its
living room is the gathering spot for evening social hours. The Lodge on
Little St. Simons Island received the Condé Nast Traveler 2000 Readers'
Choice Award for "Best Small Hotel in North America."

Location
Virtually untouched for centuries, this island is a privately owned, 10,000-acre barrier island along the Georgia coast. A rich and varied natural world, its pristine beaches, maritime forests, shimmering marshes and tidal creeks await your exploration. Frommer's highly recommends Little St. Simons Island in "Best Beaches in the Carolinas and Georgia."

Accommodations
Fifteen comfortable guest rooms are arranged in 5 charming cottages. The Lodge's two guest bedrooms are filled with rustic furniture, antique wicker and family memorabilia revealing the semblance of a bygone era. A welcoming fireplace framed with cedar boughs warms the two bedrooms, one featuring a King size bed and the other with two twin beds, each with private baths.

Nearby, the Michael Cottage, nestled at the edge of the forest, offers charm and privacy in a 1930s bungalow. With its sitting room and fireplace, two bedrooms and screened porch, it is a favorite with honeymooners and families. The distinctive design of the Helen House reflects coastal Georgia's rich architectural history with its traditional oyster-shell masonry known as tabby. Built in 1928 and named after the owner's daughter, this elegant house has three comfortable bedrooms that share two baths; two of the bedrooms have wood-burning fireplaces. The spacious living room, with a grand fireplace, opens onto a screened porch which overlooks a quiet courtyard and the expansive marshes beyond. Built in the 1980s, the Cedar House and River Lodge are known to have the best view of the Island's sunsets. Enjoy a screened porch and large deck overlooking the marshes and tidal creeks. The cottages each have a spacious sitting room with fireplace as well as four large comfortable bedrooms with private baths. All accommodations are air-conditioned.

Amenities

Seven miles of undeveloped beach are ideal for swimming, shelling and sunbathing; a fleet of bicycles, boats, canoes; a stable of horses; a tackle shed full of fishing gear; and the entire staff are at the guests' disposal.
Activities encompass the full range of Island offerings. Horseback rides beneath the canopy of live oaks and boating, canoe or kayak trips down the tidal creeks are wonderful ways to explore the Island. Saltwater fly fishing excursions to secluded inlets offer an opportunity to commune with nature as well as a chance to catch redfish, trout and flounder. A range of guided interpretive programs are perfect for nature lovers and those who just want to see the Island through the eyes of a knowledgeable guide. Of course, lazy days on the beach are one of the most popular pastimes. During the spring and summer, shorebirds flock to Little St. Simons Island. The Island's huge expanses of intertidal flats provide important foraging grounds for both migratory species and summer residents. Guided outings to favorite shorebirding locations are planned according to the tides.

Meals
The culinary staff at Little St. Simons Island makes use of nature's abundant regional offerings to create a delicious cuisine that is home-style and brimming with flavors from the sea. Low-country cooking, homemade breads and a dietary consciousness combine to create succulent meals, reflective of this bountiful region. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served family style in the main dining room. The day dawns to find a morning meal that's as delicious as the views; a full breakfast is served family style in the Hunting Lodge dining room. The staff
will gladly prepare a picnic for those who wish to lunch in a more natural setting. Depending upon the weather, guests are often invited outdoors for an oyster roast or crab boil on the front lawn. Sunset barge cruises aboard the "Captain Doug" are another cocktail hour favorite. Family style dinners satisfy even the heartiest appetite with bountiful meals. Entrees often highlight local seafood, with house specialties such as Crispy Flounder with Ginger Peach Sauce, Grilled Cinnamon Duck Breast with Red Currant Sauce, and Beef Tenderloin with Leek and Mushroom Sauce. Once a month, The Lodge offers a full-moon beach picnic where baskets of blue crabs or Low Country Boil is eaten from a pavilion which overlooks a seven-mile stretch of beach so pristine, so deserted, that it's easy to believe you're the first to ever walk its sandy shores.
