Glendeven is a delightful country inn developed around a handsome New England Federalist farmhouse built in 1867 by Isaiah Stevens for his family, who occupied the home until the late 1930's The Inn is set on two and a half acres with ocean views and is a special place away from the hustle and bustle of the "real world". We offer spacious accommodations, all with private baths and most with fireplaces. You are invited to enjoy our lovely breakfast in your antique-appointed room or out in our comfortable living room with other guests. Warmth and hospitality are featured along with beautiful gardens, deer, hummingbirds and nearby trails to the beach and ocean's edge. The renovated barn features an exquisite fine arts and crafts Gallery operated by a group of local Mendocino artists.
Location
Glendeven is located on the headlands above the beach and bay at Little River. A leisurely stroll brings you to the waters edge in minutes. For those who enjoy the relaxation and isolation of hiking, Glendeven is fortunate to be situated adjacent to Van Damme State Park with its hundreds of acres of pristine coastal headlands. The small New England style town of Mendocino on a small peninsula jutting out to the Pacific Ocean devotes its talents to fine dining, excellent art work, and unusual things to be found in small shops.
Accommodations
The Farmhouse has three suites with fireplaces, ocean views and outdoor porches or balconies. Additionally, it has two cozy rooms, one with dormer windows overlooking the ocean, the other looking out onto a private garden. The Stevenscroft building, added in 1984, houses four spacious luxury rooms with fireplaces and ocean views, each distinctly furnished with contemporary art, comfortable furniture, antiques, custom woodwork and tile bathrooms. Most have an outdoor balcony or porch. The Carriage House Suite, opened in 1999, offers "luxurious seclusion". It features a large living room with fireplace, refrigerator and microwave, a private balcony overlooking the Inn's gardens and old water tower, a bedroom with a magnificent woven brass king-sized sleigh bed and stove/fireplace, and a beautifully tiled bathroom with a skylight and double shower.
All rooms at Glendeven have featherbeds, CD players, hairdryers and robes.
Amenities
Glendeven also is home to one of Mendocino's top art galleries, operated by a partnership of local artists and featuring their contemporary ceramics, paintings, jewelry and etchings. Lovely gardens and grounds contribute to Glendeven's aura of peacefulness, making it a wonderful place to stay on your next get-away to the spectacular Mendocino coast.
For those who enjoy an evening of theater, there is fine theater offered most of the year Thursday through Sunday evenings presented by the Mendocino Theater Company or the Warehouse Repertory Theater Company. Also look for outstanding musical theater staged by the Gloriana Opera Company (707-964-7469) before Christmas and in July and August. In July make plans for two weeks of outstanding music when the acclaimed Mendocino Music Festival (707-937-2044) sets up their big tent on the headlands overlooking the bay. Allan Pollack, a San Francisco Bay Area composer and conductor conceived the idea of combining Mendocino's fine musicians with world-renowned soloists and the Bay Area's favorite musicians to make the Mendocino Music Festival the finest small festival of its kind. We'd be delighted to assist in making any of theses events part of your stay with us.
Winesong!, Mendocino County's annual wine auction and festival, is held the weekend after Labor Day each year to benefit our local hospital.
Mendocino also offers the activities of canoeing, kayaking, surfing, golfing, tennis, biking, horseback riding and hiking.
Meals
A delicious breakfast is delivered to the rooms in the morning, and proprietors Sharon and Higgins host wine and hors d'oeuvres each evening. The day at Glendeven begins with a generous breakfast of fresh squeezed juice, an interesting fruit dish and a hot egg dish. Warm muffins or coffee cakes combine tastefully with locally roasted coffee and teas. Most guests enjoy breakfast in the privacy of their rooms, but you also may elect to have it in our sun room overlooking the ocean.
